Born Dorothy Jean Loomis February 1, 1930, in San Francisco CA. She dedicated her life to her family, her work and to volunteering. She loved to travel. Her first trip abroad in July 1969 was a month- long journey through Asia. After that, she always kept a half-packed suitcase and was ready to go at a moments notice. She continued to explore the world...literally every continent. Dorothy had no sense of direction, but never got lost, just many unplanned detours on roads less traveled.
A few of her accomplishments included graduating from college at age 38, she was an active 4H and FFA parent for both sons, Director and President of her beloved Mother Goose Parade, and if that wasn’t enough, she rose though through the officer ranks of the Heartland Lions Club, she served on the Cajon Valley School District Personnel Commission 1996-2002, and the Bargaining Unit for Calif School Employees Assn. Following her retirement in 1995 she was name “Citizen of the Year” and there was no stopping her as she continued volunteering.
When her dementia no longer afforded her the ability to live alone, she moved to be with with her loving youngest son in Palm Springs, where she continued to volunteer with DAP, LGBT Center of the Desert, Sanctuary Palm Springs and Well in the Desert, to name but a few. And of course she continued to enjoy life to the fullest through entertaining guests at her son’s home and traveling overseas right up to the end of her wonderful life.
She is survived by many people she touched during her extraordinary time with us, her sons Loren (Genanne) of Modesto, Stefan (Chris) of Palm Springs, two grandchildren Rebecca (Josh) and Sebastian, and also her husband Tom Woods. She was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Jack Maranda, who shared three children, Diane, Roger (Wanda) and Carol.
Dorothy passed at home in Palm Springs on August 10, 2019 surrounded by family and friends. Per her request, a cocktail party will be held in her honor in Palm Springs. There will be no service, only a private family interment of her ashes at El Cajon Cemetery.
