Obituary For George Charles Dickson

George Dickson passed away on November 25, 2020. He was born on September 27, 1921 in Boston Massachusetts to George and Anne Dickson.

George attended University of Notre Dame beginning in fall of 1941 on football scholarship. With the attack on Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in US Army and was with 101st Infantry, jumping into France on D-Day and liberating Europe while capturing Germany. He returned and began Notre Dame again in 1945 , playing football and graduating in August 1949 with BA – Physical Education.

Upon graduation, he began coaching at various universities and colleges in United States to include Marquette, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Pacific, Southern California. As you can see, George could not keep a job---- that is really the rule of thumb as they follow the head coaches or friends to other positions. He then coached in the NFL for another 20 years: Raiders, Broncos, Green Bay Packers, Washington, Atlanta , New Orleans Saints, Chargers to name a few. He retired in about 1980.

George was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Poway, Ca. He was predeceased by his wife, Edith Dickson.

He will be greatly missed by his friends, who were family to him.

George was one hell of a man...jumped into Normandy with the 101st on D-Day and survived that to jump into Holland for Market Garden then went to Bastogne and the Battle of the Bulge. He is in the book "Hells Highway " and he fought with the men in the "Band of Brothers " Years later he met my son who was a paratrooper in the 82nd and after talking for over four hours he gifted my son his jump knife that he had kept from June 6, 1944. He was a great friend to my wife and I and we miss him everyday...Airborne...How Far All the Way RIP George

Dear Coach Dickson, I'm sorry to hear of your passing. We enjoyed a cigar and a wee dram of Scotch at Notre Dame in 2005, as we tailgated with the Tripucka family at the Michigan State vs Notre Dame Game in South Bend. I was grateful for a few of the stories you shared with me about your WWII experiences. You were my father's backfield coach at Marquette University, and he admired you greatly. When I was a boy, I learned a few of my first swear words from you, when we visited you in Detroit. I use them with pride and in appropriate situations in your honor. I had hoped to meet you again at some point to tell you how much you meant to my pops. I will get to Dead Man's Corner Museum in Normandy to pay my respects. I was just around the corner in Grand-Camp Maisey in 2017. You are a legend and hero. Peace to you and your family, Coach. You will be missed, Mark Webster, Grand Haven, MI c/o Jim Webster Marquette University Football, Class of 1960.
